Who We Are

FICM is a ministry in the heart of the city with a heart for the city, by living out Isaiah 61: 1-3 since 1981 and for the second 30 years or until Jesus returns we will be living out Isaiah 61: 1-7. When Pastor Joe Browne was lead to return to Los Angeles, he began a radio program on KTYM, FM to encourage people that God is with them in the midst of life. From that humble beginning, a church was formed to minister to people who “fell between the cracks of the traditional church” because of the choices they made in life and subsequently not fitting into the “norm” of regular churches.

As Pastor Joe learned the needs of his community, a food program was started and has been the focal point of addressing the immediate need of the community in the Mid-Town section of Los Angeles. Pastor met several moms who felt their children needed to have spiritual input and allowed us to pick up their children each week for service. We quickly learned that the children were in need of nutritious meal to help them focus. When FICM was relocated to South Los Angeles, at the corner of 46th and Western Avenue, it was evident food scarcity was a major concern and the children we served wanted to continue to be with us in our new location.

We have been a way station for many, who stop in for a while, to be accepted, to be encouraged and to help each one to decide their next step in life. We have also been an educational opportunity for so many volunteers who have learned what life is like for the disadvantaged and marginalized, and then giving them some perspective of how we have so much in common and how they can be part of a solution back in their own communities.

We have provided a safe haven for children for so many years with a Saturday Kid’s Club, a S.A.Y. Yes! Youth Development Center, offering educational enrichment programs during school breaks. Several women who became unhoused and ended on Skid Row stated that did not want to return to that environment, so we created a safe community for women to gather, enjoy fellowship and encourage one another.
